Hastings resident Shirley Jean Hickman, 86, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2020, at Mary Lanning Healthcare, Hastings, NE.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 31, at Juniata United Methodist Church in Juniata with Pastor Kathy Uldrich officiating. Burial will be at Juniata Cemetery in Juniata. Visitation is one hour prior to service at the church. Memorials may be given to Juniata United Methodist Church.
Shirley was born April 9, 1933, to Jesse DeWitt & Esther (Thompson) Hickman in Hastings, NE. She graduated from Hastings High School in 1951. She attended Hastings College and worked at Dutton Lainson Manufacturing Co. and at a Christian book store. After being employed at the Christian book store, Shirley and her friend Mary LaVeda Appling decided to move to California. They both lived there for about 25 years, sometimes in separate towns because of their job situations. After Mary retired and moved to Florida, Shirley decided that it seemed like a good idea and joined her in North Fort Myers. She was employed at Winn Dixie in North Fort Myers until her retirement.
She was a member of Faith Assembly of God Church where she was involved in a number of activities, among them the Sunday Morning Choir and “The Gospel According to Scrooge” a Christmas Musical. She served on the decorating committee for Women of Faith. She moved back to Hastings in November 2019, because of ill health and was a resident of The Kensington at the time of her death.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; siblings and spouses, Gladys & Frank Woolsey, Ruby Hickman, Lois & Jimmie Morgan, Doris & James Scott, Lorraine Hickman, Ray Hickman, and Howard Hickman; nieces & nephews, Karen, Larry, David, Eva, Lori, Bob, Douglas, Brian, and Sarah Anne; and good friend Mary LaVeda Appling.
