Stephen Stewart

Hastings resident, Stephen E. "Steve" Stewart, 64, passed away Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at his home.

Rosary will be Friday, December 8, 2017; 7:00 P.M. at Butler Volland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, December 9, 2017; 10:00 A.M. at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Hastings with Father Stephen Graeve officiating. Burial with military rites by Hastings Veterans Organizations will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings. Memorials may be given to Steve Stewart Memorial Fund. Visitation will be Thursday, December 7, 2017; 4:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. and Friday, December 8, 2017; 1:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to service at the church.

Steve was born July 23, 1953, in Chadron, Nebraska to William & Barbara (Montague) Stewart. In 1971 he graduated from Assumption High School, Chadron, Nebraska and attended Hastings College and Central Community College. Steve served in the U.S. Air Force from September 10, 1971 until September 9, 1975. Steve married the love of his life, Cathy L. Camby, with whom he celebrated 42 years of marriage with on June 7. They moved from Omaha to Hastings in 1976.

Steve was a police officer for the Hastings Police for eight years, President of the Hastings Fire Department Reserves for ten years, and a paralegal for Adams County Attorney's office for 17 years. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Hastings Fire Department Reserves, and American Legion. There was no greater joy in Steve's life than his eight grandchildren, who lovingly referred to him as Poppo. Steve rarely missed their events and loved showing them off. He was very dedicated to serving the public, especially through the Hastings Fire Department Reserves.

Stephen was preceded in death by his sister, Lisa Bondy.
