Steven Kleveland

Hastings resident Steven R. "Steve" Kleveland, 74, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center-CHI, Lincoln, NE.

Graveside Memorial Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings with Pastor Josh Davis officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, please use the north entrance. A luncheon will follow the graveside service at Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the Nebraska Wildlife Federation, American Cancer Society, or Faith Lutheran Church. Book signing is Saturday 9-5 p.m. and Monday 9-5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Steve was born January 10, 1944, in Belleville, KS to Ervin H. "Shorty" & Rozelle M. (Howell) Kleveland. He graduated from Chester High School in Chester, NE in 1962. He attended Milford Technical Trade School in Milford, NE. Steve married Sharol Nass at St. John Lutheran Church in Chester on June 10, 1963.

He worked for his dad at Foote's Station and managed the Foote's South Station. They moved to Hastings in the mid-1960's where he attended Hastings Community College. He worked at the Hastings Regional Center and Kansas Nebraska Gas Company. On November 1, 1968, he joined the City of Hastings engineering department as the head draftsman under Willis Hunt. In 1975, he became the city's sexton and managed its cemeteries for 37 years.

He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping in just about every climate and condition the United States and Canada has to offer. Steve considered himself an amateur chef and anyone who tasted his cooking would have granted him that. When he could not use up everything from his garden in his cooking, he canned what was left for family and friends. Steve savored his entire life with his wonderful family and friends.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Clarence & Eleanor (Bailey) Nass; sister & brother-in-law, Barb & Don Kasl; brother, Charles Kleveland; brother-in-law, Tony Gonzales; and two nieces.
