Steven Spilinek

Hastings resident, Steven Dale Spilinek, 59, died Thursday, July 24, 2014 at his parents' home in Hastings, Nebraska after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Services with Masonic memorial tribute will be Monday, July 28, 2014; 2:00 P.M. at First United Methodist Church, Hastings with Rev. Dr. Samuel R. Rathod and Pastor Greg Lindenberger officiating. Burial with military rites by Hastings Veterans Organizations will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings. Visitation will be Sunday, July 27, 2014; 1:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. with family present 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to service at the church. Memorials may be given to the Boxcar Youth Theater Company or Steven D. Spilinek Memorial Fund.

Steve was born August 23, 1954 in St. Paul, Nebraska to Dale & Sally (Forbes) Spilinek. Steve attended Hastings Public Schools, graduating in 1972 from Hastings High. He entered the U.S. Army and served from September 29, 1973 until July 16, 1975. He graduated from Central Nebraska Technical College. After graduation he worked as an electrician at several local businesses. He worked for Hastings Utilities for the past 33 years. He really loved his job and especially the people he worked with. He always said they were like a family to him. Steve worked up until a few days before his passing. Steve was united in marriage to Julie Zaroban on April 7, 1979 in Hastings. To this union three sons, Bradley, Tyson and Justin, were born. Steve coached his sons' soccer, baseball and softball teams. He was a soccer referee for many years. Hastings Community Theater played a big role in his life. He also enjoyed Husker football, the College World Series, The World Cup, and attending theatrical productions across Nebraska. He was a member of the Hastings Masonic Lodge #50 serving as Master Mason in 2003.

Steve was preceded in death by his son, Tyson; sister, Shelly; and grandparents, Everett & Carrie Forbes, Anton Spilinek, and Esther Spilinek Matousek.
