Vernon Shepherd

November 2, 1929 — September 10, 2016

Vernon James Shepherd ('Shep'), age 86 of Hastings, Nebraska passed away at his home on September 10, 2016. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly (Farmer) Shepherd and his daughter, Pamela Joyce Capouch (nee Shepherd). He is survived by his son Kevin (Stephanie) Shepherd of Boulder, Colorado; two grandsons, Riley and Jake Shepherd; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Capouch; one niece, Leanne Gardenhire; and a son-in-law, Pat Capouch.

Shep was born November 2, 1929 on a farm near Westerville, Nebraska to James P. and Mary (Hickenbottom) Shepherd. Following graduation from Broken Bow High School in 1947 he married Beverly on June 6, 1948 and lived in Grand Island, Nebraska. He was employed as a store salesman by Kaufmann's until 1955. Subsequently he worked for Allen's in Grand Island for 16 years until 1971, prior to becoming the Manager of Allen's in Hastings where he retired in July, 2000.

Shep was an avid outdoorsman and thoroughly enjoyed both pheasant hunting and fishing. He was awarded a Nebraska Master Angler Award in 1976. Needless to say Shep's 'blood ran red' whenever Husker football was being played and if he could not watch the game live he taped the games on his VCR for future enjoyment.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 29, 2016; 6:00 P.M. at Butler Volland Chapel with Chaplain John Mueller officiating. A private interment will be held in the family plot at Westerville Cemetery, where his parents, wife and daughter are buried. There will be no viewing or visitation. Memorials may be given to Nebraska Game & Parks Commission.

The family wants to express its gratitude to Shep's neighbors who extended so many kindnesses toward him during his last years, as well as former and existing Allen's employees with whom he shared such a large part of his life.
