Viola Baugatz

Hastings resident, Viola L. Baugatz, 97, passed away Monday, September 28, 2009, at Perkins Pavilion Good Samaritan Society-Hastings Village, Hastings, Nebraska.

Services will be Monday, October 5, 2009; 10:00 A.M. at Butler-Volland Funeral Home Chapel, Hastings with Pastor Art Schakat officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. Visitation will be Sunday, October 4, 2009; 1:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M., and Monday, October 5, 2009; 1 hour prior to service at Livingston-Butler-Volland Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to Good Samaritan Society.

Viola was born September 26, 1912 in McHenry, North Dakota to Frederick Carl & Martha Louise (Bruns) Baugatz. At age five the family moved to Jordan, Montana, where Viola was raised and attended school and graduated from Jordan High School in 1931. In 1932 she moved to Arthur, North Dakota where she met family friend Rev. August Hoeger, who founded the Good Samaritan Society. While in Arthur, Viola was trained in many duties and services of the Good Samaritan Society. Then in 1938, she moved to Fargo, North Dakota, where she worked for the Good Samaritan Crippled Children's School. In 1941, she moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and continued her career working for the Good Samaritan Society. In 1968, she moved to Stanton, Nebraska, and worked as an Administrator for Good Samaritan Society. Six months later she moved to Hastings and worked as an Assistant to the Administrator. In 1977, she worked as the manager of Goldbeck Towers and then retired in 1988. She went back to work as a night manager of the Towers until 1991 when she retired. Viola was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd since she moved to Hastings, Nebraska. She will be fondly remembered for her service to the Lord and the many people she has assisted and touched throughout her life. Her family was extended by many Great nieces and nephews and by the many friends that she cherished throughout the years.

Viola was preceded in death by her parents, brother Harold Baugatz, sisters Pearl L. McAlister and Agnes M. Welch, and nephews David C. Baugatz and John Carroll.
