Viola Garrelts

Hastings resident, Viola J. Garrelts, 90, of Perkins Pavilion, died Thursday, April 12, 2007 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be Saturday, April 14, 2007; 10:00 A.M. at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Pastor Joel Remmers officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Hastings, Nebraska. Visitation will be Friday, April 13, 2007; Noon - 9PM with family present from 6PM-8PM at the funeral home & Saturday, April 14, 2007; 1 hr. prior to service at the church. Memorials may be given to First St. Paul's Lutheran Church or Mary Lanning Hospice.

Mrs. Garrelts was born February 25, 1917 in Adams County, near Glenvil, Nebraska to Simon & Sena (Stromer) VanBoening. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Glenvil, Nebraska. She graduated from Glenvil High School and attended Kearney State Teachers College before teaching in rural schools in Adams & Clay counties. On October 14, 1945, she married Richard Mohling and to this union 4 children were born. Viola returned to teaching and completed her degree at Kearney in 1969 and then taught at District 60 and at Trumbull, Nebraska. Upon retirement, Richard & Viola moved to Rogers, Arkansas. After his death on June 7, 1977, Viola returned to Hastings. On September 18, 1980, she married Bill Garrelts and he preceded her in death on January 31, 1993. She was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hastings Quilters' Guild and Hastings Area Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed quilting, genealogy and china painting.

Mrs. Garrelts was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Richard H. Mohling & Bill Garrelts, three sisters Wilhelmina Classen, Marie Stromer, Grace VanBoening & two brothers, Willie VanBoening & George VanBoening.
