Hastings resident, Virgil J. 'Jud' Kennedy, 85, of 504 Lane F, died Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.

Services will be Friday, August 22, 2008; 2:00 P.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Pastor Charles Johnson officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Kenesaw Cemetery, Kenesaw, Nebraska. A memorial will be established. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 20, 2008; 5PM-9PM, Thursday, August 21, 2008; 9AM-9PM and Friday, August 22, 2008; 9 until service time.

Mr. Kennedy was born October 22, 1922 in Adams County, near Kenesaw, Nebraska to Den & Hilda (Krick) Kennedy. He attended Denman School until the 10th grade and graduated from Kenesaw High School in 1940. After graduating, he worked for Clark Huckfeldt Custom Harvesting & Trucking. He served in the United States Navy during WWII from January 22, 1944 until May 16, 1946. He was a survivor of USS Bismarck Sea which sank off the coast of Iwo Jima on February 21, 1945.The USS Bismarck Sea was the last carrier to sink during WWII. On December 24, 1949, he married Vera Berg in Grand Island, Nebraska. He was a manager for H&M Equipment for 32 years. He continued with the company on a part time basis after his retirement in 1984. He was a member of the American Legion, life member of V.F.W. and a member of the Eagles.

Mr. Kennedy was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ronald & Denny.
