Former Hastings resident, Wayne A. Cherry, 74, of Austin, Texas, died Saturday, August 10, 2002 at Seton Medical Center, Austin, Texas.
Services will be Friday, August 16, 2002; 10:00 A.M. at Butler-Volland Chapel with Rev. Harold D. Stromer officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska.
Wayne A. Cherry was born March 26, 1928 in Buffalo, Oklahoma to James R. & Blanche (Lytle) Cherry. He attended elementary school in Oklahoma and entered the United States Army on September 4, 1952 serving until October 10, 1954. Through letter writing, he became acquainted with a young woman named Shirley Ann Sidlo. They found themselves to be in love and decided to marry on September 16, 1954. She preceded him in death in May of 1994. After living in Blue Hill, Nebraska and Sapulpa, Oklahoma, they settled in Hastings, Nebraska in 1962. He worked in maintenance for the City of Hastings, retiring at an early age due to health. He remained in Hastings until 1998 when his health started to fail. He then moved to Austin, Texas with his son and daughter-in-law, J.D. & Ellen Blackwell. Due to an unfortunate accident in 1999, he fell and broke his hip and through other complications, lost his leg. After that he lived in a care facility in Temple, Texas while recovering. When he recovered, he moved to a care facility in Austin, Texas. He made many friends everywhere he lived. He enjoyed people, hunting and fishing. He also loved to play the guitar and spent many hours listening to records. He took part in a lot of the center's activities and won several contests.
Wayne A. Cherry was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Shirley and two sisters, Pearl & Pauline.
