Wayne Guthrie

August 16, 1926 — June 15, 2012

Hastings resident, Wayne "Gus" E. Guthrie, 85, passed away Friday, June 15, 2012 at Perkins Pavilion Good Samaritan Society-Hastings Village, Hastings, Nebraska.

Services will be Monday, June 18, 2012; 1:00 P.M. at First United Methodist Church, Hastings with Rev. Dr. Lee R. Wigert officiating. Burial with military rites by Hastings Veterans Organizations will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church or donor's choice. Visitation will be Sunday, June 17, 2012; 1:00 P.M. - 9:00 P.M. with family present 2:00 P.M. - 4:00 P.M. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Wayne was born August 16, 1926 to Roy Earl and Pearl (Krabel) Guthrie in Fairbury, Nebraska. The family moved to McCook and later to Hastings. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1944. He was "Gus" to those who have known him for a long time. He was united in marriage on March 27, 1954 to Bonnie Jean Jones in the Hastings First United Methodist Church. To this union two sons were born, Scott Lee and Todd Alan. Wayne was employed by Dutton Lainson Co. for 44 years serving in a number of capacities, receiving several awards for his accomplishments. He retired in 1988. He served as a Cpl. in the US Army 16th Corps Headquarters in Japan from 1950 to 1952 during the Korean War. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church since 1939. He previously served as Cubmaster to Pack 192, was a member of the evening Kiwanis Club, a long time member of the Four Rivers Gun Club, the Archery Club and served as treasurer for the Doniphan Trap Shoot for several years. He has been a member of the American Legion Club since 1956 and is a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed shooting his guns and his bows and arrows and hunting and fishing with his brother-in-law, Tony and father-in-law, Erle. Weekends and vacations would find the family enjoying camping out with their trailer. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who loved to tease and he will be greatly missed.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Deloris & Tony Gunderson; in-laws, Erle & Maude Jones; and brother-in-law, Jerry Hueske.
